Stefon Diggs

The New England Patriots are coming off a strong 2025 NFL season, one in which they ended up making the Super Bowl. Ultimately, they went on to lose to the Seattle Seahawks, but for them to make the strides they did in Mike Vrabel‘s first season as a head coach was impressive.

The next step for New England will be to reconfigure their roster a bit, and one key area they must look to improve outside of the offensive line is their wide receiver room.

While the Patriots are projected to have $42.7 million in projected cap space according to Over The Cap, there is one move they can make that would help them significantly clear up more financial flexibility to make a blockbuster trade or signing. The move they must look to make is releasing Stefon Diggs.

The New England Patriots Must Cut Stefon Diggs

The Patriots went on to sign Stefon Diggs ahead of the 2025 NFL season after Diggs was a free agent following the one season he spent with the Houston Texans after being traded there from the Buffalo Bills. This signing drew criticism at first, but ended up proving to be effective for the Patriots.

With having a young quarterback like Drake Maye, a proven, experienced wide receiver like Diggs went on to help the offense take strides. Diggs ended up with 1,123 yards and five touchdowns over an 82.5% reception throughout last season, showing he was a reliable player Maye could rely on.

While this was the case, Diggs is also 32 years old, and can’t be expected to continue to play at this high of a level. Diggs, much like the rest of the Patriots’ receivers, ended up failing to show up in the Super Bowl. New England needs to restructure their wide receiver room better with playmakers that can make an impact for the future.

By moving on from Stefon Diggs, the Patriots would free up $16.8 million in cap space. This would create a substantial increase in financial flexibility that would help New England make a blockbuster move this offseason. It is clear that moving on from Diggs needs to be a move the Patriots consider this offseason.
