A former Buffalo Bills coach is looking like he is about to receive a big-time promotion.
Brian Fleury is Heading to Seattle
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Seahawks are expected to hire 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury as their offensive coordinator.
“Seahawks are expected to hire 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury as their offensive coordinator, per sources,” Schefter wrote Sunday on X. “Fleury will replace Klint Kubiak, who became the Raiders head coach.”
In 2013, Fleury served as the Bills’ defensive quality control coach, working under head coach Doug Marrone. Fleury spent one season with the Bills before moving to coach with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and 49ers.
It was somewhat surprising that Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald didn’t promote a coach from within the organization to serve as the next offensive coordinator. However, ESPN’s Brady Henderson offered some insight on Sunday about why Seattle ultimately chose Fleury.
“Macdonald was seeking scheme continuity in his next coordinator, and although the coach didn’t promote from within as he initially thought he would, quarterback Sam Darnold and the rest of Seattle’s offense shouldn’t have to start over entirely in 2026,” Henderson wrote. “The 49ers run a version of the West Coast offense that Kubiak — who spent the 2023 season in San Francisco — ran in Seattle.”
The Seahawks are coming off their second Super Bowl victory in the last 15 years, and Fleury is stepping into a team with high expectations to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
Fleury has a tough challenge ahead, as Kubiak was one of the top offensive coordinators in the NFL last season, earning him the head coaching position with the Raiders.
If Fleury can kick off another great run for the Seahawks next season, he may find himself in the running for an NFL head coaching job.
Former Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott Could Land a Job Next Offseason
Fleury may not be the only ex-Bills coach in the running for NFL head coaching positions next season; Sean McDermott could emerge as the top candidate in the open market.
It was surprising that the Bills chose to part ways with McDermott after their loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round on Jan. 17. It was also quite unexpected that McDermott didn’t secure another coaching job after being let go by the Bills.
It seemed McDermott wasn’t interested in pursuing any head-coaching or other coaching positions for the upcoming season. He may be considering taking a year off to explore his options for next season.
McDermott coached the Bills for nine seasons, leading them to the playoffs each year except for Josh Allen‘s rookie season in 2018. Although McDermott was unable to take Buffalo to the Super Bowl, he achieved significant success that many NFL teams will be eager to find.
It will be interesting to see if McDermott secures a head coaching position next offseason and whether any teams choose to part ways with their current coach simply because they believe they can bring McDermott on board.
