Martin had previously interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys outside linebackers coach job this cycle, but he’ll now land in Los Angeles and work with an outside linebacker room that includes Tuli Tuipuloto and former Steeler Bud Dupree, as well as Khalil Mack and Odafe Oweh. It’s one of the better outside linebacker rooms in football, and Martin will look to have the same success in Los Angeles as he did with the likes of T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig in Pittsburgh.
Dylan Roney is Los Angeles’ outside linebackers coach, serving in that role for the first time in 2025. He began his career in Los Angeles as a defensive assistant in 2024.
Martin will be joining the same coaching staff as former Steelers LB Sean Spence, who the Chargers are reportedly hiring as their inside linebackers coach.
Martin got his start with the Steelers as a scouting assistant in 2016 and worked his way up to a coaching assistant in 2018. From 2020-22, he was the assistant outside linebackers coach for the Steelers before becoming the outside linebackers coach in 2023, a role he held until this past season.
Prior to his coaching career, Martin played college football at Missouri, and he also served as a graduate assistant for the Missouri program from 2015-2016. The Chargers’ job will be Martin’s first in the NFL outside of Pittsburgh.
With Martin heading to Los Angeles, that leaves former Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni, offensive assistant Mateo Kambui and defensive quality control coach Jason Brooks as the only coaches from Mike Tomlin’s staff to not find a new job, at least based on what’s been publicly reported.
To replace Martin, the Steelers hired Texas Tech outside linebackers coach C.J. Ah You.
