The Seattle Seahawks became victims of their own success this season when the Las Vegas Raiders hired away offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to be their next head coach. With Kubiak gone, this presented an obvious hole that needed filling in their coaching staff. Seattle was widely expected to promote from within, and understandably so. However, the Seahawks often “zag” when folks expect them to “zig” and they did so once more.

On Sunday, it was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Seattle is expected to hire San Francisco 49ers tight end coach Brian Fleury to be their next offensive coordinator. This was a name that was not on anyone’s radar… anyone except Mike Macdonald, of course.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner and Brady Henderson, Fleury was heavily involved in San Francisco’s ground attack, as his official position last season was tight ends/run game coordinator. Henderson also notes with Fleury coming from the same Shanahan coaching line as Kubiak, the continuity will be kept largely in tact for quarterback Sam Darnold. This was exactly the logic for hiring within, so going with Fleury does make sense in this regard.

Fleury also brings intimate knowledge of Seattle’s most hated rival. He’s been with the Niners since 2019 in various coaching roles, and of course also knows how best to attack both the Rams and Arizona Cardinals. Although, this will be Fleury’s first time as an offensive coordinator, and with Mike Macdonald focusing primarily on defense, he will have a lot on his plate as the one in full control of the offense.

The Seahawks will begin their title defense with a rookie offensive coordinator, but if Mike Macdonald’s earned anything it’s our trust he’s made the right call.
