The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of work to do this offseason to return to being Super Bowl contenders. While the 49ers will get Nick Bosa and Fred Warner back next year, the pass rush and wide receiver rooms need some help.

The 49ers have some ammo to make trades, sign players, and take players in the 2026 NFL Draft. But there’s one option they could take to land even more draft compensation over the next few years.

As ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposed, the 49ers could trade away Mac Jones. And in this trade idea, Barnwell has the 49ers landing a trio of valuable draft picks in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings.

49ers proposal sends Mac Jones to Vikings for 3 draft picks

“Vikings get: QB Mac Jones, 2027 third-round pick. 49ers get 2026 second-round pick, 2027 fifth-round pick (conditional), 2028 third-round pick (conditional),” Barnwell proposed.

This would be a strong return for the 49ers, as they would be landing three draft picks, including a third and a second, in exchange for Jones and a third.

Brock Purdy is the starter in San Francisco, and the 49ers could find another project quarterback, maybe someone like Zach Wilson, to take up the mantle as backup quarterback in San Francisco.

While the 49ers have indicated a willingness to keep Jones, passing up the chance to trade him for a haul like this might be hard to do.

What makes this proposal even better for the 49ers is the conditions attached to the return. Barnwell’s proposal would have the 2026 fifth-rounder included if Jones starts four games in 2026, and if he starts 12, it gets upped to a third-rounder.

Then, if Jones signs an extension next offseason with the Vikings, the 49ers would land another third-round pick.

But what if Jones doesn’t start for the Vikings in 2026 and doesn’t re-sign? The 49ers would only move up a round from their third to the Vikings’ second.

This proposal from Barnwell would give the 49ers a much better draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, while also leaving the door open for the 49ers to potentially bring home two third-round picks and a second rounder over the next three drafts if Jones thrives in Minnesota.

It’s a complicated trade idea from Barnwell, but if the 49ers could pull something akin to this off with the Vikings, or another team interested in Jones, it might be a deal worth exploring for the 49ers.
