The Las Vegas Raiders’ new defensive line coach probably has plenty of team gear stashed away in the closet.

Travis Smith, who spent nearly a decade in various roles with the Raiders from 2012 to 2021, is back as part of Klint Kubiak’s first staff.

Smith spent last season as the defensive run game coordinator with the Tennessee Titans after three seasons as defensive line coach with the Chicago Bears. He was expected to convert to a new role of senior defensive assistant and pass rush specialist next season before opting to come to the Raiders.

Smith first paid his NFL dues with the Raiders, starting as a defensive assistant, then as defensive quality control coach. He then coached outside linebackers and was assistant defensive line coach when he worked with star edge rusher Maxx Crosby under defensive line coach Rod Marinelli.

Crosby broke out as a star during that time.

Smith first broke into coaching at his alma mater of Cal Poly before brief stints at Santa Monica Junior College and Colorado.

The Raiders also made a previously reported move official Monday, announcing Matt Robinson as safeties coach.

Those moves serve to start more fully building a staff that has all three coordinators in place less than a week after Kubiak formally accepted the job.

Longtime Kubiak associate Andrew Janocko will serve as offensive coordinator for the first time in his career, while holdover assistant Rob Leonard has accepted a promotion to defensive coordinator.

The latter move appears to come with a seal of approval from Crosby, who shared the team’s announcement of Leonard’s promotion on his Instagram story.

“Legend,” Crosby wrote of the man who served as his position coach for the past three seasons.

While the first two coordinators are similar to Kubiak in being short of their 40th birthdays, the first-time head coach chose to go with more of a veteran to run his special teams.

Joe DeCamillis, 60, has won Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams as a special teams coordinator. The first one came when he worked under Kubiak’s father, Gary, with the Broncos.

He also ran the special teams for the Dallas Cowboys, Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent the past two seasons as associate head coach and special teams coordinator at South Carolina.
