As the Green Bay Packers prepare for the NFL offseason, the team doesn’t have too many holes across the roster. But that doesn’t mean that the front office won’t look to add to the team, especially since the goal of winning a Super Bowl title with this current core hasn’t been met.

After the trade for star pass rusher Micah Parsons last offseason, the Packers’ defense had its big star. But the secondary was still a concern, and it remains the biggest priority heading into the summer.

Green Bay wants to be a consistent threat in the NFC, and while they are good, if they can add more talent to the secondary, it could take them to being a great team. The front office has been very opportunistic in recent years, and we could see this play out again this offseason.

But how the Packers plan to do this remains a big question, and they could go either the free agent route or by trade. Green Bay has the tools to build a better team, and with quarterback Jordan Love on the roster, they can’t afford to waste another season.

Greg Newsome Lands With Green Bay Packers

One option on the free agent market for the Packers to consider going after is veteran cornerback Greg Newsome. Newsome was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars from the Cleveland Browns at the deadline, and he helped his new team clinch the AFC South division title.

Jacksonville has both Newsome and fellow free agent cornerback Montaric Brown hitting the open market, and they likely won’t bring both players back. Newsome seems like the more logical choice for them to allow to walk, and a team like Green Bay could heavily benefit from this.

Overall, for the 2025 season, Newsome played in 17 games, putting up one interception, 52 total tackles, and two tackles for loss. Newsome isn’t the big turnover machine like some other cornerbacks, but he has remained consistent in his ability over his career.

The veteran only has four career interceptions in five years since he entered the NFL, but he brings extreme versatility to his teams. Newsome can play both inside and outside within a defensive scheme, and this could heavily benefit the Packers.

With the Packers having a strong pass rush, adding a player like Newsome to the secondary could make this defense much more well-rounded. Green Bay has to add talent to the cornerback room, and Newsome isn’t likely to completely break the bank.

But the veteran can provide this team with more depth, and he could help this unit be even more explosive next year. Newsome could fit in well with the Packers, and this is a pairing that could easily take place once free agency opens.
