An already drama-filled Eagles’ offseason could get even crazier in April.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, people around the NFL believe the Eagles may pick a quarterback on Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft to “apply a little bit of pressure” on starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who Fowler says is at a “crossroads” with the organization.
That would be a stunner.
Last February, Hurts led the Eagles to their second Super Bowl in three years. He outplayed Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Philadelphia’s victory and earned the game’s MVP trophy.
Ever since the Eagles’ disappointing 2025 season ended in a first-round playoff loss to the 49ers, Hurts’ future with the team has been questioned.
The Eagles are listed at -115 on BetRivers to win the NFC East Division next season. Our in-depth BetRivers Sportsbook review provides a guide on how to use their site. For an even closer look at how to bet on NFL futures, make sure to check out our NFL futures betting guide.
It’s not as shocking as it sounds.
The Eagles have a history of quickly moving on from established stars once they reach a crossroads.
Look back at the 2020 offseason, for example: the team drafted Hurts in the second round even though they already had quarterback Carson Wentz — likely for the same purpose: to apply a little pressure and to have a reliable backup in case Wentz got hurt again.
By the end of the 2020 season, Wentz was benched and Hurts took over as the starter. Wentz got traded that next offseason.
So if the Eagles were willing to do it then, there’s no reason they couldn’t do it again now with Hurts. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is considered the best Day-2 option in a weak quarterback class. If the Eagles were to make this decision, maybe Nussmeier would be one of their targets.
With the final year of Hurts’ deal expiring in 2028, Hurts could want a contract extension soon. The Eagles need to decide if the 28-year-old is worth the long-term investment.
