NFL insider Albert Breer believes Eliot Wolf’s job is safe with the New England Patriots.

A reader asked if Patriots vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden would get a promotion and take Wolf’s job as the executive vice president of player personnel at the end of the 2025 season. Breer doesn’t see it happening, and he explained why in a response to the reader.

The Patriots hired A.J. Highsmith to be the team’s pro scouting director. This was notable, as Highsmith is the son of Alonzo Highsmith, who works closely with Wolf. The Patriots have overhauled multiple front office jobs throughout the organization, but Alonzo Highsmith has managed to stick around in an executive role.

“I don’t think things are nearly as bad in New England as you may have been led to believe,” Breer responded in an SI.com mailbag. “And I think the proof of it is in the hire of A.J. Highsmith as the team’s new pro scouting director. Highsmith is the son of Alonzo Highsmith, who is the right-hand man to EVP of player personnel Eliot Wolf. Hiring someone that close to Wolf into a vital director’s role is a good indication that Wolf’s going nowhere.”

Wolf worked side-by-side with Vrabel and Cowden in rebuilding the Patriots’ roster throughout the offseason.

The partnership looked solid from an initial glance. New England spent the most money in free agency, and they had arguably the best 2025 NFL draft on paper. Unless the new-look Patriots fall off a cliff, it would appear as if Wolf is safe in his position, for now.
