When it comes to offseason needs for the Kansas City Chiefs, running back is at or near the top of the list.

Kansas City had one of the worst rushing attacks in the NFL last season, and part of that had to do with the team’s lackluster blocking upfront. The Chiefs’ offensive line ranked 25th in run-block win rate, per ESPN.

Another issue is Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt don’t offer anything special and the Chiefs could use a more explosive player at the position. Now is the time to make the change with Hunt and Pacheco both pending free agents.

In his latest mock draft, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com sees the Chiefs turning to the 2026 NFL draft for their next running back. He predicts Kansas City will use the ninth overall pick on Notre Dame running Back Jeremiyah Love.

“Patrick Mahomes finally gets an elite back,” Jeremiah said. “If defenses continue to play a conservative shell defense against the Chiefs, Love can make them pay.”

Love isn’t just the best running back in this year’s class, he’s one of the best players overall.

A true three-down back, Love excels as a runner and pass-catcher (he even lined up in the slot at Notre Dame) while also providing a steady blocker in obvious passing situations.

Love would also add a much-needed explosive element to Kansas City’s offense thanks to his ability to make house calls from anywhere on the field.

While taking a running back this early has become taboo in recent years, there is strong justification for taking Love here given his superstar potential.
