The Kansas City Chiefs know that if they are to climb back to the top of the NFL mountain, this offseason will be pivotal in laying the groundwork for it to happen.

With the Chiefs missing the playoffs in 2025, we get the sense the apex predator of the AFC won’t be making that a habit.

That means they will upgrade at positions of need, and it is here where the franchise can do Patrick Mahomes a big favor. The run game was poor last season with Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, and given that both are free agents, an overhaul of the position could be coming.

NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah has the Chiefs taking Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the ninth overall pick, and that is nightmare fuel for the NFL.

Why Love pick isn’t good for rivals

Given Love’s ability as both a runner and receiver, the Chiefs would have a genuine home-run threat out of the backfield.

With Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice as Mahomes’ top receiving weapons, defenses will often sink into coverage to protect the long ball, but with Love, the thought is that they can’t.

Because against a light box? Yeah, Love will feast, and the Chiefs’ ground game will take center stage, and it will force defenses to commit more to stopping the run. And in turn, give Worthy, Rice, and Patrick’s other weapons more space to get the air attack rolling.

The Chiefs had a down year in 2025, but if Love is the franchise’s selection, it could be a game-changer.
