The San Francisco 49ers head into the NFL offseason as a team that arguably exceeded expectations, considering injuries ripped the team apart on both sides of the football, most notably Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and George Kittle all going down with season-ending injuries at different points of the 2025 campaign.

Along with these three stars going down, Kittle being the most recent, suffering a torn Achilles during the NFL playoffs, the 49ers never got wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk back on the football field, ultimately ending his time with the team.

Fortunately, the 49ers’ front office may have some options to explore during the offseason to potentially address the wide receiver position and the defense.

With the 49ers having a need at the wide receiver position, Tyreek Hill, who was recently released by the Miami Dolphins, is an intriguing option for the storied franchise. However, he’s a risk for many reasons, as David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard explains.

“Speed has been the name of the game for Tyreek Hill,” Lombardi said. “And we know that the 49ers could use some speed in the receiver room, but on the surface, it just doesn’t seem likely that San Francisco would be able to find a money fit with a guy who has a lot of off-field issues, who’s coming off of such a severe injury.”

Lombardi believes if the 49ers can convince Hill to take a prove-it deal for the league minimum, it’s something the team should consider. However, it doesn’t seem likely.

“Do I think it’s likely? No. But if Tyreek Hill is somebody who’s forced to play at a very low salary this next year because of so many questions regarding his injury and the off-field incidents, then I mean you it’s not infathomable to see the 49ers using at least an offseason roster spot for him. They need more in this wide receiver room.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Hill chooses to do and what his options will be on the open market, as it might be difficult to convince him to go anywhere other than returning to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bradley Chubb a Better Option Over Tyreek Hill?Bradley Chubb Miami Dolphins San Francisco 49ers

A more realistic option compared to signing Hill in NFL free agency, according to Lombardi, is the 49ers bringing in veteran linebacker Bradley Chubb.

“Bradley Chubb is more realistic because he’s already proven that he could deliver production after his knee injury,” Lombardi said. “He’s a little bit younger than Tyreek Hill. He’s still 29 years old right now. Both of those spots are positions of need.”

Although Chubb has also had his injury issues over the years, he might be a solid addition for San Francisco if he can stay healthy moving forward.

In 17 games during the 2025 NFL season with the Dolphins, Chubb recorded 8.5 sacks, 24 solo tackles, two forced fumbles and 20 quarterback hits.

Chubb would be a risk, much like Hill, but he’s an option the 49ers should consider.
