The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to bolster their struggling backfield in the coming offseason, and one analyst believes they can go bargain shopping for a versatile running back.

The Chiefs didn’t get much consistent production from their backs in 2025, one of the main reasons the offense sputtered as the team failed to make the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggests the team can take a big swing for the coming year, landing veteran Alvin Kamara in a trade that will only cost a bit of draft capital.

Chiefs Could Parlay With Rebuilding Saints

Knox named Kamara as one of the top players available on the trade market this offseason, predicting a team could land him in exchange for a 6th-round pick and a 7th-round pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Knox noted that the New Orleans Saints are expected to head into a rebuild and could look to sell off assets, which would put Kamara at the top of their trade list.

“The New Orleans Saints are set to build around second-year quarterback Tyler Shough, and they may decide to part with longtime running back Alvin Kamara in order to do it,” Knox wrote. “New Orleans is projected to be $41.8 million over the cap, and dealing Kamara would save $3.4 million—or $11.5 million if traded after June 1.”

While Kamara has been a productive back over his NFL career — rushing for 7,250 yards and 61 touchdowns while adding 4,948 receiving yards and 25 receiving touchdowns — he has seen his production dip in recent years.

The Saints would also have to convince Kamara to continue his NFL career with a new team before being able to trade him, Knox added.

“The Saints can’t expect a big return for a 30-year-old running back coming off a sprained MCL—especially after he hinted that he’d consider retirement if traded during the season,” Knox wrote. “However, New Orleans may already have his replacement in its sights and might accept a true bargain offer.”

Knox suggested the Chiefs could have some competition within their division, putting the Denver Broncos among the other potential suitors for Kamara.
