A major change has been made to the 30-year-old quarterback’s contract after a dismal 2025 NFL season.

Mahomes‘ contract has been altered to lower his salary cap number to $34.65 million ahead of the 2026 campaign.

It had previously been set at $78.2 million.

This means that his contract will be back-loaded with Mahomes unlikely to lose money overall.

The decision will save the Chiefs a whopping $43.56 million in 2026.

It comes after the Chiefs failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

They finished the 2025 season with just six wins from 17 games.

This is despite the Chiefs reaching Super Bowl LIX a year before.

Quarterback Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million deal in 2020.

He has four years remaining on this deal.

The three-time Super Bowl winner missed the end of the 2025 campaign after suffering a torn ACL against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.

This has cast doubt over Mahomes’ readiness for the start of the 2026 season.

But Mahomes is targeting a Week 1 return for the Chiefs.

His contract restructuring comes as veteran tight end Travis Kelce, 36, continues to ponder his future in the league.

Kelce’s current contract with the Chiefs is set to expire ahead of the 2026 season.

Meanwhile, Chris Jones has called for Tyreek Hill, both 31, to return to the Chiefs after being cut by the Miami Dolphins.

The Chiefs also possess the number nine 2026 NFL Draft pick as they target a return to the Super Bowl.

This will be held from Thursday, April 23.
