The San Francisco 49ers are going to pile up the frequent flyer miles during the 2026 NFL season, as they will be the designated home team for the Mexico City game.

It was announced on Wednesday by the NFL and 49ers that the club will play a home game at Estadio Banorte next season against an opponent still to be determined.

Wednesday’s announcement comes after the 49ers were previously confirmed to be playing the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL’s first regular season game in Australia.

The Rams will be the designated home team in that matchup, which reportedly could serve as the 2026 season opener on either Sept. 9 or 10. The league usually opens the season with the reigning Super Bowl champs in the first game, but the travel logistics of hosting a game in Australia could force a change.

Traveling to Melbourne and Mexico City means the 49ers will be playing games in three different countries next season. Their schedule also includes road games against the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons.

Per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers could end up logging more than 38,000 travel miles during the 2026 season.

For comparison, the Los Angeles Chargers led all teams in total miles traveled during the 2025 regular season with 37,086. The 49ers were fifth on that list with 28,363 travel miles logged.

The NFL announced on Feb. 2 it was returning to Mexico City for a regular season game in 2026. The league previously hosted games in the city five times, most recently in 2022 when the 49ers defeated the Arizona Cardinals.

Mexico City’s deal with the NFL is for one regular season game in each of the next three years. Estadio Banorte, which serves as the primary home for Liga MX club Club América, will be the host site for each game.

The agreement with Mexico City is part of the NFL’s plan to play nine regular season games outside of the U.S. next season.

San Francisco’s opponent for the game will likely be revealed in the spring when the league unveils the full schedule for the 2026 regular season. The list of potential opponents includes the Cardinals, Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings.
