Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson could find a new home ahead of the 2026 season.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the young quarterback and his future in Indianapolis. All signs point to the Colts moving on from the 23-year-old. At this point, it’s a matter of when, not if.

A trade seems inevitable and NFL insider Aaron Schatz believes a change of scenery is necessary for Richardson. Schatz named Richardson as the one player from the team who needs a new home for the upcoming season.

“Richardson’s early performances with Indianapolis just haven’t made the grade. As a rookie in 2023, he posted a 45.0 QBR in four starts. In 2024, he registered a 47.4 QBR in 11 starts. He missed almost all of last season, first because the Colts chose to start Daniel Jones over him and later because  Richardson sustained a fractured orbital bone during pregame warmups in October.

“Shane Steichen was supposed to be the coach who could develop an offense around Richardson, but it hasn’t worked out. Perhaps another coach could make it work for the signal-caller.”

It’s been a messy three seasons for Richardson. The Colts took a chance on the Florida product after he played in just 24 college games for the Gators with only 13 starts. It was a risk, but the reward was high enough that the Colts felt they couldn’t pass it up.

However, fast forward three years, and the move has largely been a disaster for Richardson — and at times, the Colts. The emergence of Daniel Jones in 2025 provided a much-needed spark for the organization, but his season ultimately ended with a torn Achilles tendon.

Following Daniels’ injury, it was supposed to be Richardson’s time to shine. Instead, Richardson was sidelined after sustaining a freak orbital fracture in an “equipment mishap” involving elastic bands in October. The opportunity was there for Richardson, but due to his injury, the Colts turned to their former quarterback and potential future Hall of Fame, Philip Rivers.

What’s Next for Anthony Richardson?

The 2026 offseason will be a perfect time for the Colts to move on from the former No. 4 overall pick. This offseason is as good an opportunity as the Colts will have, and ESPN’s Stephen Holder thinks they could get a decent package in return.

“There’s no reason to think the Colts couldn’t get something for a quarterback who will be just 24 next season and is a former first-round pick,” Holder wrote.
