Since the 2015 season, the New York Giants have a record of 61-119-1, the second-worst mark over that span, second to only the New York Jets (59-122). The Giants’ point total of 3,509 is also second behind the Jets.

Scoring, or the lack thereof, has not been emphasized enough as the culprit of the Giants’ woes. The name of the game is to outscore the opponent, and the 21st-century NFL is designed for offenses to flourish.

The Giants never got that message, or they got it and then ignored it. Teams that can score a lot of points will win most of the time. The Giants have always been built on defense, with the offense always being something used to spell and support the defense.

Those days are gone. No matter how good the defense is, you need to have a functional offense that can play both a ground-and-pound and a shootout style.

Since 2015, the Giants have had 21 games without scoring an offensive touchdown. That is the second-highest amount behind, you guessed it, the Jets, who have 34. Since 2016, they have not broken into the league’s top 15 in points and have finished 26th or greater six times.

The Giants’ ignorance of the importance of a strong offense has left them in NFL limbo. They are a team that needs to play catch-up and fast.

The coaching change to John Harbaugh and the arrival of a quarterback who might finally fill the “franchise” role in Jaxson Dart should help the Giants break out of this funk.

In fact, the Giants can actually be trendsetters again if they can build a dominant offense and let the defense ride in the back for once.
