The New Orleans Saints have some incredible momentum heading into the offseason. While they finished last in the NFC South, the promise that Tyler Shough has brought to the team has the city and the team excited about the future.
He looks to be the answer at quarterback, and now with the cap struggles no longer an impact, the Saints look poised to land some impact players this offseason. One position of need that the Saints should focus on is cornerback.
With Alontae Taylor hitting free agency, the Saints could use a new CB. That’s why PFF.com’s Mason Cameron linked the Saints to a free agent cornerback, who’s the son of a Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots All-Pro, in Asante Samuel Jr.
Saints linked to Asante Samuel Jr. as best landing spot
“One enticing franchise that should pick up the phone is the Saints, pairing Samuel with his former and current Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley,” Cameron writes.
Samuel played with Staley during his days with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022 and 2023. During those seasons, Samuel had two interceptions each of those seasons, with 11 passes defended in 2022 and 13 in 2023.
After four seasons with the Chargers, and a neck injury that derailed his 2024 and 2025 seasons, Samuel came to the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing six games, making three starts, and getting one interception.

While he wasn’t playing as well in 2025 as he did during his Chargers days, if he reunites with Staley in New Orleans, with less pressure as the number one cornerback and a year removed from his neck injury, he could be a great free agent option for the Saints.
Thanks to Quincy Riley and Kool-Aid McKinstry, the Saints don’t need Samuel to be a day-one starter. Instead, he can be a high-quality depth who can take over in a pinch, or even earn a starting job depending on how the summer goes.
This fit makes a ton of sense for both sides, especially as the 26-year-old Samuel looks to bounce back and prove he’s still a good starter following his neck injury.
