As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gear up for the 2026 season, one intriguing storyline is the chance for running back Sean Tucker to emerge as the team’s true RB2 behind lead back Bucky Irving. With Tucker stepping into a larger role, he has a real opportunity to carve out a consistent, impactful presence in the offense.
Tucker, a third‑round pick in 2023 out of Syracuse, has shown flashes of the skill set that made him an intriguing prospect: contact balance, vision, and toughness. While injuries and competition have limited his production so far, he now has the chance to define himself as the second option on early downs while staying involved in passing situations, where his receiving skills and pass‑protection ability add value.
A defined role could help Tucker build confidence and rhythm, giving the offense a dependable complement to Irving’s work as the lead back.
For the Buccaneers, fully embracing Tucker means they must re‑sign him as a restricted free agent this offseason. Locking him into a contract ensures continuity in the backfield and prevents the team from losing a young player who has already shown he can contribute immediately.
If Tucker can build on the opportunities he’s had so far, including a few of 100-yard games, he could make a strong case for a full-time RB2 role. Establishing Tucker as the team’s second back would give Tampa Bay a deeper, more versatile backfield and help stabilize an offense that will need a stronger running game in 2026.
