The Dallas Cowboys have decided to part ways with linebacker Logan Wilson on Friday, and the New England Patriots should think twice about bringing him on board this offseason.
Wilson just completed his sixth season in the NFL, but his performance this season left much to be desired. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 66th linebacker out of 88, and he was notably graded as the 70th best linebacker against the run.
In 2024, Wilson excelled against the run while playing with the Cincinnati Bengals, ranking fifth among 83 linebackers, suggesting his best days could be behind him.
Wilson faced another challenge as he didn’t perform well, finishing 60th in coverage grade. However, he excelled in pass rushing, ranking in the top 10.
It’s a telling sign that the Cowboys released Wilson, especially since they acquired him at the NFL trade deadline in the middle of the season. Wilson still had two more years remaining on his contract, which would have kept him in Dallas until 2028.
Wilson may be nearing the end of his career, prompting the Patriots to explore different options if they decide to pursue a free agent linebacker this offseason.
New England should think about selecting a few young linebackers in the 2026 NFL Draft to develop over time, rather than opting to sign a free agent like Wilson.
