Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley provided some context Friday to his teammate, wide receiver A.J. Brown, teasing a move to the New England Patriots.

During an appearance on ESPN’s NFL Live with Dan Graziano, Barkley said Brown is “a huge Patriots fan” and always has been:

Barkley was asked about Brown and the Pats after Brown appeared on the Dudes on Dudes podcast (38:20 mark) this week with legendary Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Julian Edelman:

At one point, Edelman said, “We’re all Patriots,” which elicited a wink from Brown. The Eagles wideout later clarified that he was “trolling.”

Over the past two seasons, Brown has expressed frustration at times over his role in the Eagles’ offense, leading to a great deal of speculation about a potential trade.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported this month that the relationship between Brown and the Eagles is currently “tenuous,” and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler followed up with a report that the Eagles are expected within the league to “entertain” trade offers for Brown.

Those rumors may have led many to question Brown’s intentions during the podcast appearance, although Barkley said, “No, I don’t think so,” when asked if Eagles fans had anything to worry about regarding Brown.

Brown, 28, spent his first three NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans before a trade to the Eagles in 2022.

He was named a Pro Bowler in each of his first two seasons in Philly, finishing with 88 receptions for 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2022, and 106 catches for 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023.

Brown still reached the 1,000-yard and seven-touchdown mark in each of the past two seasons, but as the Eagles went more run-heavy with Barkley in the fold, Brown’s production dipped to 1,079 yards in 2024 and 1,003 yards last season.

If a trade to New England were to materialize, Brown would join an up-and-coming quarterback in Drake Maye, who threw for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns, finished second in NFL MVP voting and helped lead the Pats to a Super Bowl appearance last season.

The Patriots would be a logical landing spot for Brown since they lack a true No. 1 receiver in the passing game, but as of now, every indication is that any link between Brown and New England is purely speculative.
