The Green Bay Packers will interview a coach originally hired by Jonathan Gannon in Arizona for the team’s open special teams coordinator position. According to Bill Huber of Packers on SI, Matt LaFleur and the Packers will interview Sam Sewell, who is currently the assistant special teams coach with the Cardinals.
Gannon, who is now the Packers defensive coordinator after a three-year run as the Cardinals coach, hired Sewell in Arizona before the 2023 season. Between 2023 and 2025, Sewell worked under long-time special teams coordinator Jeff Rodgers, who is now the coordinator in Buffalo.
Sewell played tight end at the collegiate level (Northern Arizona, 2006-10) but comes from a running backs background. His father, Steve Sewell, played the position for seven seasons with the Denver Broncos. Sam Sewell then coached running backs at several different collegiate stops, including Indiana State and Eastern Michigan. He added special teams coordinator to his role at Eastern Michigan in 2022 and then made the jump to the NFL — after 13 seasons coaching in college — with the Cardinals in 2023.
Sewell is now one of at least four interviews for the Packers in their search for a new special teams coordinator. Rich Bisaccia, who coached special teams in Green Bay from 2022 to 2025, stepped down from the role last week.
