We’re back right where we were one year ago.
Well, the Washington Commanders are far from where they were a year ago, but when it comes to one NFL player, yes, a very familiar refrain is in the air again regarding the Commanders.
Commanders fans are already, and several media members as well, talking about the Commanders pursuing and signing pass rusher Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals. You remember, don’t you, how last offseason, Hendrickson demanded a trade from the Bengals, and so much of the talk in the DMV was how the Commanders were a pass rusher away from again being a contender in the NFC. So much was made of the Commanders needing a pass rusher and possibly trading for Hendrickson.
Well, Hendrickson ended up agreeing to terms with the Bengals for 2025, and here we are again. Only this time, Hendrickson is free and clear to sign with anyone he wishes. It can’t be overlooked that Hendrickson is now 31 and will turn 32 in December. And the Commanders’ defense? Well, no one would now say they are a pass rusher away from being a contender. Certainly, anyone who follows the Commanders to a considerable degree is aware, no, fully aware, the Commanders need much more than a pass rusher on that defense.
Consequently, with the Commanders having several needs on the defense, and Hendrickson turning 32 during this upcoming season, and thirdly, Hendrickson’s market value still bringing a higher salary, it is not likely in my view the Commanders will be out there shopping and competing for Trey Hendrickson.

Instead, look for the Commanders to sign several defensive players, intending to address all three levels of the defense. Perhaps if the Commanders had enjoyed another 12-5 season with the defense playing much better, then yes, they might be more willing to sign Hendrickson in hopes they could again contend in 2026.
Look for the Commanders to sign perhaps five players to three-year deals, players who are signing their second NFL contracts, ranging in age from 25-27.
