WOLFSBURG, Germany – Japanese forward Kento Shiogai scored his first German Bundesliga goal on Saturday as struggling Wolfsburg were beaten 3-2 at home to Augsburg.

The 20-year-old January signing from NEC Nijmegen came on in the 65th minute at Volkswagen Arena and scored six minutes later, tucking in Mohamed Amoura’s square ball on a counter to restore their lead at 2-1.

But an 87th-minute penalty from Michael Gregoritsch and a low strike from Elvis Rexhbecaj in the stoppage time turned the game around for the visitors as Wolfsburg went six games without a win.

They are just a point and place above the relegation zone in 15th, ahead of their rivals’ weekend fixtures.

“It gives me confidence to score a goal,” said Shiogai, looking to make the Japan squad this summer for the World Cup, a tournament that he says “everyone in the world pays attention to.”

“I can’t feel satisfied at all with one goal. I’ll try to score a lot more and get the team out of the fight for survival.”
