The Los Angeles Rams are coming off a tremendous season, making it to the NFC Championship Game. Additionally, Matthew Stafford was named NFL MVP after throwing 46 touchdown passes in the regular season.
While the Rams didn’t make it to the Super Bowl, they are in prime position to be one of the favorites to come out of the NFC in 2026. However, that is not the focus today. In a recent piece on Athlon Sports, Andrew Perloff predicts that the Rams will trade for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
“After the Dolphins released Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb, Tagovailoa seems like a natural cut candidate,” Perloff writes. “But the Dolphins would be aided financially by finding a trade partner, even if they had to pay a chunk of the contract. Releasing Tagovailoa before June 1 would create a $99.2 million salary-cap hit. No surprise that the Rams lead the way in this market. Tagovailoa doesn’t make sense as a starter right now. There are too many questions about his ability to stay healthy. Rams head coach Sean McVay could be interested in developing him as Matthew Stafford wraps up his career. Of course, the money will be the key for Miami to make this happen and only certain styles of offense fit Tua.”
Tua was benched by the Dolphins at the tail end of the 2025 season. This came after he signed a $212.4 million extension ahead of the 2024 season. Now with the Dolphins moving on from veterans Bradley Chubb, James Daniels, and Tyreek Hill, they are hoping to find a trade partner for their former first-round pick.
Considering that Stafford has been on retirement watch dating back to last season, the Rams could look to have a built-in replacement who can take over when Stafford does step away. While Tua has his shortcomings, he could be a bridge in the post-Stafford era.
