John Morton is returning to the Broncos as offensive passing game coordinator, a source confirmed Sunday to The Denver Gazette.

Morton was the Lions offensive coordinator in 2025 but was let go in January after just one season in Detroit. He later joined the Broncos as a consultant during their playoff run and helped design a touchdown pass play to offensive lineman Frank Crum in the divisional round win over Buffalo.

Morton previously served as the Broncos’ offensive passing game coordinator for two seasons (2023-24) under coach Sean Payton. Morton is back in Denver with a retooled staff.

The Broncos fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and wide receivers coach Keary Colbert after falling in the AFC Championship Game. Quarterbacks coach Davis Webb was promoted to offensive coordinator, and Denver is expected to hire Ronald Curry as wide receivers coach. The Broncos promoted offensive assistant Logan Kilgore to quarterbacks coach.

Morton has a long history with Payton. He was an offensive assistant with the Saints in 2006 and later joined the New Orleans staff as wide receivers coach in 2015-16. Morton was also the Jets offensive coordinator in 2017.
