The Denver Broncos‘ offseason is going to be mired in plenty of “what if”.

But as the Broncos look to pick up the pieces and assemble an even better squad in 2026, they’ll be doing so with a tweaked coaching staff. Davis Webb got a promotion to offensive coordinator after flirting with some job opportunities elsewhere. And in the shuffling that’s come from that move, Denver is reportedly making a secondary coaching addition to help bulk up the offensive staff under Webb. And the reinforcements are coming from a familiar face, too.

Broncos reportedly hiring former Detroit Lions OC John Morton as pass game coordinator (again)

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Payton and the Broncos are bringing back a familiar face in John Morton to serve as the team’s pass game coordinator. Morton spent the 2025 season in Detroit as Dan Campbell’s replacement for Ben Johnson — a hire that flopped and proved to be short-lived as the Lions stumbled through a disappointing campaign.

For Morton, it is a chance to run it back with the Broncos in the latest pin-balling between the two franchises. Morton coached in Detroit in 2022, then spent 2023 & 2024 as the pass game coordinator in Denver before getting plucked by another Sean Payton acolyte in Campbell once again.

He’ll now serve in the same role in Denver as he did during his last stint. Denver ranked in the top eight in the NFL in passing touchdowns and interceptions in 2023 and also scored a top eight finish in passing touchdowns in 2024 as well. Helping to get young quarterback Bo Nix into another gear will be his top prerogative in 2026. The good news, of course, is that Morton’s already got a year of time on task to be familiar with how to do exactly that.
