The backup quarterback situation for the New England Patriots is less than ideal, with Joshua Dobbs currently positioned behind Drake Maye.

Dobbs has started 15 games over six NFL seasons but has only mustered a 3-12 record. He may not be the backup option the Patriots are looking for as they head into another season. He’s entering the second year of an $8 million contract he signed last offseason, but New England could save $3.7 million if it decides to release him this offseason.

If the Patriots choose to move on from Dobbs, they should look into signing a seasoned veteran with extensive NFL experience. Joe Flacco, an eighteen-year NFL veteran, will be a free agent this offseason, making him a perfect fit for New England.

Flacco wrapped up this past season, starting four games for the Browns, then was traded to the Bengals, where he started another six.

At 41 years old, Flacco continues to show he can still deliver, amassing 815 yards and two touchdowns this past season, despite throwing six interceptions. He led the Browns to an impressive playoff appearance in 2023, finishing with a 4-1 record as the starter. Flacco’s career also boasts a Super Bowl victory with the Baltimore Ravens in the 2011-12 season.

Flacco likely doesn’t have a lot left in the tank to make it through a full season as a starter, but he could step in for Maye for a few weeks if he were to miss time and keep the Patriots afloat until Maye returns.
