Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky hasn’t started an NFL contest since the 2023 season when he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Trubisky received heavy praise from insider Daniel Popper of The Athletic on Monday though, with the Los Angeles Chargers senior writer calling the 31-year-old signal-caller an enticing soon-to-be free agent.

“Mitchell Trubisky is one name to watch in this market. The No. 2 pick in 2017, he started 50 games for the Chicago Bears over his first four NFL seasons. He got a bridge opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 but was benched early that season for Kenny Pickett,” Popper wrote. “Trubisky got a chance to play basically a full game for the Buffalo Bills in Week 18 this past season. The film was pretty solid. If a team is looking for the high-upside, low-risk one-year quarterback deal in the vein of (Baker) Mayfield, (Sam) Darnold and (Daniel) Jones, Trubisky is the optimal candidate this year.”

Trubisky signed with the Steelers in March 2022 after four years with the Chicago Bears (including a 2018 Pro Bowl campaign) and one with the Buffalo Bills.

The North Carolina product ushered in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era in Pittsburgh as the team’s starter to open the 2022 season before being replaced by Kenny Pickett.

Trubisky went 2-5 in seven starts with the Steelers across two seasons, recording a 64.1 completion percentage with 1,884 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions, good for a 77.6 passer rating.

He was released by the team in February 2024 and re-joined the Bills that March as Josh Allen’s backup.
