DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions will play in Germany for a regular season game in the 2026 season.

The NFL announced on Tuesday that the Detroit Lions will be one of the participating teams for the league’s return to Munich during the 2026 season, according to team officials, as part of the NFL International series with regular season games in Mexico City, Madrid, Paris, Melbourne, Rio and London.

“We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season,” Detroit Lions President and CEO Rod Wood said. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”

The game will be at FC Bayern Munich Stadium “Allianz Arena” and who the Lions will play against has not yet been announced.

The Lions have an established relationship with Germany through marketing rights in the Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) region, which has included the introduction of a mascot Leo Löwe with a German flag-inspired mane and hosting Thanksgiving Day Classic watch parties in Cologne, Germany.

They’ve also hosted youth football education camps across Germany with multiple featuring wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, whose mother is from Cologne, team officials said.

“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” Brown said. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”

This game will mark the Lions’ return to the international field more than a decade after their Nov. 1, 2015, game against the Kansas City Chiefs at London’s Wembley Stadium.
