After Davis Webb served as the Denver Broncos’ most recent passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2025, he is now the team’s offensive coordinator. The new pass game coordinator is John Morton, who has a deep history in the NFL, having played and coached for many teams. Here’s more information on Morton’s coaching resume in recent years.

New York Jets (2017)

Morton, who’s originally from Auburn Hills, Michigan, attended Avondale High School and played collegiately at Western Michigan as a wide receiver. Morton went undrafted in 1993 and spent time on the practice squads of the Oakland Raiders, Green Bay Packers, and Jacksonville Jaguars during his NFL career, while also playing in the Canadian Football League.

Since 1998, Morton has been a devoted football coach, coaching for the Raiders, the University of San Diego, the New Orleans Saints, USC, the San Francisco 49ers, the New York Jets, the Broncos, and the Detroit Lions

In 2017, Morton joined the Jets staff as the team’s offensive coordinator under Todd Bowles, but the stint was short-lived as the organization decided to part ways with Morton in January of 2018.

Oakland / Las Vegas Raiders (2019-2021)

As someone who coached the Raiders from 1998-2004, Morton returned to the Raiders in 2019 to be a senior offensive assistant under Jon Gruden. It was definitely a different experience for him because even though Morton returned to Oakland, the team moved to Las Vegas before he decided to leave the organization.

Detroit Lions (2022)

Dan Campbell brought in Morton to be the team’s senior offensive assistant in 2022, a year in which the Lions didn’t make the playoffs but posted a 9-8 record and placed second in the NFC North. Morton was on an offensive staff that helped contribute to the success of the team’s only Pro Bowlers that year, such as Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, Frank Ragnow, and Jared Goff

Denver Broncos (2023-2024)

Sean Payton, who Morton had coached alongside on the Saints from 2015 to 2016, hired Morton as the team’s passing game coordinator in February of 2023.

In his first season with the Broncos, things were shaky: the Broncos finished 8-9 and didn’t qualify for the playoffs. The following season, Morton maintained the same role and worked with Bo Nix, who the team drafted after deciding to part ways with Russell Wilson in the offseason.

Morton played a big role in helping develop Nix in his first NFL season. The team improved next season, finishing with a 10-7 record and making the playoffs before losing to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.

Detroit Lions (2025)

In 2025, Morton returned to the Lions as offensive coordinator after Ben Johnson left the team to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears

Returning to Detroit for one season wasn’t the greatest experience for Morton, as the team finished with a 9-8 record but didn’t qualify for the playoffs and finished dead last in the NFC North.

The Lions offense didn’t have the same success it once had under Johnson, and things became so bad that Morton was relieved of his duties as the team’s offensive coordinator in November, with Campbell taking over for the remainder of the season.

Early in January, the Lions decided to fire Morton, and a few weeks later, he returned to the Broncos in the postseason as a consultant. About a month later, Denver re-hired him to be the team’s pass game coordinator once again. Morton has the opportunity to help Payton and Webb ensure Nix’s upcoming season is his best.
