Southeast Bulloch High School is mourning the loss of legendary football coach Fred Shaver, who passed away Wednesday. He was 91-years-old. Shaver led the Yellow Jackets to back-to-back state championships in 1972 and 1973 and built a program that became a staple of Brooklet athletics.Shaver began his coaching career at Calhoun High School in 1959 and joined Southeast Bulloch in 1966. Over eight seasons, he compiled a 76-46-6 record and retired in 1973. The school’s football field was later named Fred Shaver Field in his honor, where he continued to attend home games and support other athletic teams.In October 2023, SEB celebrated the 50th anniversary of its 1973 undefeated state championship team with a ceremony on Fred Shaver Field. The 1973 squad capped a 12-0 season with a 22-8 victory over Duluth, marking the program’s second straight Class B state title and its 24th consecutive win. Between 1971 and 1973, Southeast Bulloch went 36-1.Shaver’s legacy at Southeast Bulloch extends beyond championship wins, remembered for his lifelong dedication to the players, the community, and the school’s athletic programs.
