March doesn’t just spell the start of free agency. That’s when NFL teams can resume trading, too, and there will be plenty of players on the move as different squads try to get better. ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Ben Solak highlighted the 15 best players who could be on the trade block, accounting not just for their contracts and resumes but predicting the odds they could be dealt, too.

And New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler made the cut. He was ranked second-best at quarterback out of the group behind Kyler Murray, whose big contract and small chance of actually being traded (5%) means he’ll probably stay with the Arizona Cardinals. Contrast that with Rattler, who tied for the second-highest chances of getting traded to a new team (70%). Here’s why Graziano argues Rattler could be on the move:

Rattler started 14 games for the Saints during his first two years in the league, and New Orleans lost 13 of them. He has 12 career touchdown passes and 10 interceptions, and he has been supplanted as the starting quarterback by promising 2025 second-round pick Tyler Shough. But Rattler showed the Saints enough the past two offseasons that they were willing to give him a shot, and there could be teams out there that think enough of his talent to bring him in to see if they can coach him up into a more consistent starter.

The Saints only have two quarterbacks under contract for 2026 between Rattler and Shough, with practice squad arm Hunter Dekkers trying his hand in the spring-league USFL and Jake Haener moving on to compete for a roster spot with the Kansas City Chiefs. So if they do choose to trade Rattler they’ll need to bring in at least two more quarterbacks for offseason workouts; three if Dekkers isn’t back in the fold for training camp later this summer. It wouldn’t be hard to find a new backup for Shough, but that doesn’t mean Rattler should be pushed out the door.

Solak acknowledged just as much in a response while outlining why Rattler could appeal to other teams: “The Saints don’t want to trade a young quarterback on a rookie contract who improved as a sophomore, but teams need developmental passers, and Rattler is the best candidate this spring. Rattler excelled as more of a quick-distribution point guard last season, but he also showed good creation ability on longer, movement dropbacks. He could fight — and easily beat out — a free agent veteran in training camp for a rebuilding team.”

And which rebuilding teams could those be? ESPN listed the Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, and Las Vegas Raiders along with the Chiefs as potential team fits. The Dolphins had the same chances of trading Tua Tagovailoa as the Cardinals did of moving Murray (5%), but you never know. Rattler could be a mentor for Fernando Mendoza in Las Vegas or spend a year learning from Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles. You have to think Haener is hoping he doesn’t take his spot again in Kansas City but the Chiefs need options with Patrick Mahomes on the mend. With so few pro-ready draft prospects and viable free agents, Rattler may have a more robust trade market than some fans think.
