The key to learning something new is slowing it down. So, while the practice may not take place on a field, it helps sharpen a mind to do just that when the ball is snapped, and everything speeds up. The safety saw such a payoff this past season. After years of playing deep, the Las Vegas Raiders moved him into the box to play closer to the line of scrimmage.

The result was a career year with 104 tackles, a sack, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and 10 passes defended.

“It’s a lot faster,” laughed Moehrig. “It’s a lot faster, but it’s a lot more fun, especially just getting in there, having to pop your pads with everybody, every player, every time you’re down there, you know, you’re getting into the mix. So that’s what I like about that.

“I think it just allowed me to play more free and just was able to play within myself, have a good time, make plays, make a lot more plays coming down in the box.”
