The Tennessee Titans aren’t done rebuilding the EDGE room despite acquiring Jermaine Johnson II for T’Vondre Sweat in a trade with the New York Jets. Mike Borgonzi needs to continue stacking talent at the premier pass-rushing position. NFL free agency should provide some opportunities worth pursuing.

Many are focusing on the EDGE rushers on expiring contracts. Currently, the likes of Odafe Oweh, Kwity Paye, and Boye Mafe are among the pending free agents at defensive end. Titans fans should expect a flurry of roster cuts around the league before free agency begins, with new names hitting the market.

One name Titans fans should shortlist is Green Bay Packers EDGE Rashan Gary. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic recently claimed Gary probably won’t return to the Packers in 2026. If they make him a cap casualty, the Titans should be interested.

Former Michigan star Rashan Gary could emerge as Titans’ top free agency target

“I would be surprised if Gary is on the team next season,” Schneidman wrote in a recent mailbag article. Gary is currently slated to carry a $28 million cap charge in 2026. That’s a bloated number for a pass rusher who produced zero sacks in the Packers’ final nine regular-season games.

The Packers are currently over the salary cap, according to Spotrac. Releasing Gary would create between $11 and $19.5 million in cap space, depending on the pre-or-post June designation. The Packers probably can’t pass those savings up given their cap-strapped nature.

The Titans must remain aggressive at EDGE despite trading for Johnson, who is coming off a disappointing season due to a 2024 Achilles injury. As currently constructed, the Titans are still too reliant on Femi Oladejo and Jaylen Harrell at defensive end. Drafting an EDGE at No. 4, and/or acquiring a player like Gary would bump everyone down to a more appropriate notch.

Gary has been a productive NFL player throughout his seven-year career. The Packers are simply looking for opportunities to free up money and his sizable contract creates the perfect scenario for them. The Titans could eventually take advantage of Gary’s inevitable pending departure by targeting him in free agency.
