Cowboys draft plans figure to be volatile.
The Dallas Cowboys are expected to be very active this offseason in NFL free agency and potentially the trade market as well.
Jerry Jones has been very clear that his only goal is to get the Cowboys back to being a Super Bowl contender. In order to accomplish that goal, Dallas is going to need to spend some money.
While there are major holes that need to be filled this offseason, there are also smaller issues that need to be addressed. One of those smaller issues will be to figure out what to do behind Dak Prescott at the quarterback position.
It’s possible that the Cowboys could simply bring back Joe Milton or Will Grier. Or, they could consider adding a veteran option from outside of the roster.
Keeping that in mind, Dallas has been linked to potentially stealing a signal caller from one of its NFC East rivals.
Dallas Cowboys Could Steal Quarterback from Washington Commanders
DallasCowboys.com analyst Patrik Walker has suggested that Commanders free agent quarterback Marcus Mariota could be an option for the Cowboys.
“Truth be told, there’s only one viable option I view for the Cowboys that combines veteran experience without being too far up the age hill while also commanding a fairly reasonable salary,” Walker wrote.
“He’s 32 years old but has 82 starts and 104 games under his belt, and also provides the skill set Dallas is clearly looking for in a backup quarterback: mobile with some arm talent.”
Mariota would certainly be an interesting option for Dallas. He has had success time and time again in a backup role wherever he has been. Joining the Cowboys would give him the same opportunity.
What Would Marcus Mariota Bring to the Cowboys?
Last season in Washington, Mariota was called upon to play a good amount due to the injuries suffered by young star quarterback Jayden Daniels.
In the 11 games the 32-year-old quarterback ended up playing in, he completed 61.2 percent of his pass attempts for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Mariota also picked up 297 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground.
Adding Mariota would also be on a short-term deal. Dallas could simply give him a one-year contract to have a bonafide backup behind Prescott for the 2026 season.
There is no guarantee that the Cowboys will have interest in signing Mariota. He has simply been listed as an option if Dallas chooses to pursue him.
Either way, the Cowboys will need to figure out a backup option behind Prescott. He could fit the bill.
