Former Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson is joining the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Johnson will work with new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to help further develop quarterback Jalen Hurts.
The Texans and Johnson mutually parted ways last week. Senior offensive assistant Jerry Schlupinski will step in to coach C.J. Stroud in tandem with Nick Caley.
Johnson was considered a fast-rising quarterback guru. The former NFL QB went undrafted out of Texas A&M in 2011, he spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys. Johnson signed with the Steelers on Jan. 13, 2012 and was released that August.
Before Johnson went to Houston, he was the assistant quarterbacks coach under Kevin O’Connell in Minnesota. So he has a connection to Los Angels Rams head coach Sean McVay’s coaching tree. More than that, he doubled that up in Houston by coming to work under Bobby Slowik from the Kyle Shanahan tree.
The Steelers interviewed Johnson for their offensive coordinator position in 2024, but the job went to Arthur Smith.
Stroud was brutal in the playoffs this past season. Stroud fumbled the ball five times, losing two, against the Steelers in the Wild Card Round win. He also threw an interception against the Steelers. And then in the Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots, he completed 42.6% of his passes and threw a whopping four interceptions.
In his first three seasons in the NFL, Stroud has completed 63.8% of his passes for 10,876 yards with 62 touchdowns, 25 interceptions, and a passer rating of 93.5. Overall, Stroud has regressed since his breakout rookie season.
There was speculation that Stroud could be a trade candidate for the Steelers, but Texans general manager Nick Caserio threw cold water on that theory at the NFL Combine.
“He’s our quarterback,” Caserio said. “He ain’t going anywhere. We have a lot of confidence, a lot of belief. The philosophy DeMeco (Ryans) and I have, we’re going to support our players and do everything we can to help them.”
