The future of Jauan Jennings was among the topics circulating at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, where media members gathered insight on the San Francisco 49ers’ offseason plans.

Jennings is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and while general manager John Lynch left the door open to a return, he stopped short of any guarantees.

“Jauan’s a free agent, and we’ve been in good contact with Jauan,” Lynch said last week in Indianapolis. “We’ll see where that goes.”

However, Chase Senior of Chat Sports, who was on site in Indianapolis, expressed skepticism that Jennings will remain in the Bay Area. His reasoning centers largely on projected market value.

Jennings is expected to command at least $15 million annually in free agency. Spotrac estimates his market value at approximately $22.6 million per year, a figure that would push him beyond San Francisco’s comfort zone.

“Jennings is a good player, but he’ll be 29 years old next year, has never been a speedster, and should be in the market for at least $15 million per year,” Senior wrote, noting that the 49ers will likely prioritize getting younger and faster at wide receiver.

“He is a slower, older player,” Senior commented. “If the Niners wanted to keep him, they might have to overpay. And does it make sense to give big money to a wide receiver three? I don’t think so.”

The 49ers are already bracing for turnover at the position. Brandon Aiyuk appears headed elsewhere, while Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, and Skyy Moore are all scheduled to hit free agency. San Francisco is expected to explore reinforcements through free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft.

Despite concerns about age and speed, Jennings is viewed as a player whose style of play and physicality can spark an offense.

“He defines the Niners’ way: toughness, loving football, great cultural fit, putting fear into the opposition,” Senior said. “… He’s also a clutch player who’s a straight-up dog, and what Jauan Jennings gives you, what he gives any team, is an edge.”

That edge could make Jennings attractive to receiver-needy teams searching for a high-end WR2 or WR3, and potentially lead to an offer that the 49ers can’t match.
