Cam Newton is standing firm on why he has zero plans to walk down the aisle.
During a Friday, February 27 appearance on the TalkLesShow podcast, the retired NFL quarterback, who is a father of nine, said that marriage simply is not for him.
“I want to be around who want to be around me,” Newton said. “So if it’s five [women], if it’s six, if it’s one. I like volunteers. I don’t like hostages.”
When asked whether marriage would feel like holding someone “hostage,” the former Carolina Panthers player doubled down. “I don’t think it to be anything. I like volunteers, not hostages. I want people around me who want to be around me, and I want them around me.”

The 36-year-old added that he would also feel restricted in a traditional marriage.
“I just want you to be happy. And if I’m the person that’s bringing you happy, you can have marriage with no commitment. And you don’t have to have marriage to have a commitment,” he said.
Newton, who has been dating comedian Jasmin Brown, 36, since 2021, recently welcomed his ninth child with her in October 2025. He shares two children with Brown and co-parents seven older children — including two he adopted — with exes Kia Proctor and La Reina Shaw.
As for tying the knot, Newton said he would be “fine” never marrying “as long as [he has his] life partner.”
