Virginia Tech and Liberty have agreed to cancel their football games for the 2029 and 2030 seasons.

The Hokies and Flames were slated to play in Blacksburg in 2029 and in Lynchburg in 2030. The programs will still meet twice in Blacksburg (in 2027 and 2028) as previously scheduled.

Virginia Tech will begin the James Franklin era when it opens the 2026 season on Sept. 5 against VMI at Lane Stadium.

The Hokies’ spring game will be held on April 18.

VCU snaps W&M’s win streak at five

Dante DeFranco went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs and Hunter Gotschall pitched four scoreless innings as VCU routed William & Mary 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon in Richmond.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Tribe (5-5).

Jamie Laskofski and Jackson Woolwine each drove in a run for W&M, while Witt Scafidi had two hits and scored a run.

Gotschall (2-1) allowed one hit with five strikeouts and one walk to earn the victory.

Meanwhile, W&M infielder Matthew Kosuda has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week for the second straight week. The Mountainside, New Jersey, native hit .400 with eight RBIs and six runs in a three-game sweep of Lafayette.

The Tribe will visit Campbell for a weekend series beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.

CNU cruises by Averett

Cameron Slough had two hits and three RBIs and five relievers combined to throw five scoreless innings as No. 22 Christopher Newport rolled past Averett 12-2 on Tuesday in Danville.

Jake Benedict had three hits and an RBI and Aaron Maxie and Logan Adams drove in two runs apiece for the Captains (8-3), who have won three straight.

CNU starting pitcher Tommy Blackburn allowed both runs on four hits in four innings. Dylan Blazer, Chase Hustead, Alex Shelkin, Nick Jones and Connor Smith each tossed a scoreless inning. Hustead got the win.

Meanwhile, CNU pitcher Cooper Newell has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. The senior out of Hickory High tossed seven no-hit innings in a 5-3 victory over Division III national runner-up Messiah University.

The Captains will visit Eastern Mennonite at 3 p.m. Thursday.

ODU’s Bowen picks up league honor

Old Dominion goalkeeper Brynn Bowen has been selected as the American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week.

The senior from Salem collected a career-high 15 saves in a 10-8 win over Rider on Saturday.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

HU rallies for DH split

Camryn Hamilton hit a two-run double to cap a four-run bottom of the seventh inning and help Hampton University rally for a 6-5 victory over Youngstown State and a split of a doubleheader Tuesday in Hampton.

The Penguins (7-9) won the first game 11-0 in five innings.

Hamilton finished with two hits and three RBIs in the second game, while Carmynn Bonner added two hits, two RBIs and two runs.

McKenzie Rimmer-Jones (3-4) went the distance on the mound for the Pirates in the second game, allowing five hits.

Isabella O’Brien tossed a one-hitter with six strikeouts for Youngstown State in the first game.

Hampton (5-10) will host Campbell in a three-game series this weekend, starting at noon Friday.

W&M duo collect CAA award

William & Mary’s Francesca Davis and Tilda Larsson have been named the CAA Women’s Doubles Team of the Week.

The duo went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles last week as the Tribe posted team victories over Longwood (7-0) and Towson (5-2).

Commanders sign OL Wylie to extension

The Washington Commanders announced Tuesday they have signed offensive lineman Andrew Wylie to a contract extension.

Wylie, an eight-year veteran, has played in 45 games, including 33 starts, for Washington the past three seasons. He began his career with Kansas City, starting at guard and tackle.

The team also announced that it released center Tyler Biadasz.
