The deadline for NFL teams to use their franchise or transition tags for the 2026 season is at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 3. The franchise and transition tags were implemented to give teams a chance to retain their top talent before free agency begins.
Thus far, the Atlanta Falcons are one of three teams to apply the franchise tag, using it on tight end Kyle Pitts. The Falcons used the non-exclusive franchise tag on Pitts back on February 24, which will likely keep the former top-five pick in Atlanta for the 2026 season.
The non-exclusive franchise tag allows other teams to make offers, but the player’s current team has the right to match any offer or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. The exclusive franchise tag prohibits other teams from making offers.
Lastly, the transition tag gives teams a right to match any contract that a player receives from another team in free agency. So, which players have been tagged thus far?

“Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker will not be getting the franchise tag today, per sources,” reported ESPN’s Peter Schrager. “He will become a pure unrestricted free agent at the start of the league year.”
