The Ravens remain vague regarding the health of Nnamdi Madubuike, a pivotal defender whose absence they keenly felt last season. Reporting a neck injury after Week 2, he has not played since, nor spoken to the media. Even going back to last year, former HC John Harbaugh spoke in very cautious terms about his health.

Heading into 2026, the Ravens still have no clear idea about where Madubuike stands, a big deal for many reasons. For one thing, he is one of their best defenders, certainly, and one of their best players, overall. He also carries a hefty cap hit, which they’ll have to bear whether he plays or not.

“Not having Nnamdi this year was a horrible situation for our team”, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta acknowledged, via ESPN, regarding Madubuike’s absence last season. “Still working through a lot of his different ideas and things [so] that we can hopefully get more and more information about his situation”. He mentioned specifically Kyle Van Noy’s sack production falling off a cliff without his presence.

A third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Nnamdi Madubuike really emerged for the Ravens in 2023. He recorded 13 sacks that season and make the All-Pro team, adding 12 tackles for loss. A year later, he added another 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss. In just the two games in which he played last season, he added another 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss.

Without their stud defensive lineman, the Ravens’ defense struggled, particularly in producing impact plays. They finished with just 30 sacks, their lowest in 15 years, Madubuike’s absence having a ripple effect on the ability of others to generate pressure.

And the Ravens still don’t know when or if they’ll see Nnamdi Madubuike back on the field. But they did see him in the facility not long ago. And he posted a vague comments on social media this year that at least seemed to hint at a positive development.

In 66 starts over 78 games, Madubuike has 203 tackles for the Ravens with 42 for loss, 30 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. He is the lynchpin of their defensive front, along with Travis Jones, recently signed to an extension. But they very clearly missed him, and they’ll miss him in 2026 if he can’t return.

“There are a lot of unknowns when you build a team, and sometimes — I learned from [executive vice president] Ozzie [Newsome] — sometimes, the best thing to do is just wait for more information, and that’s what we’ll continue to do”, DeCosta said regarding the Ravens’ strategy relative to Madubuike.

The Ravens signed Madubuike to a four-year, $98 million contract in 2024. They owe him a $22,000,000 base salary in 2026, which is fully guaranteed. He is on the books for another $22,500,000 next season, though not guaranteed, in the final year of his current deal. To have $30,975,000 tied up in a player who can’t play wouldn’t be easy. But this is why players push for guarantees in their deals.
