The New York Giants and Geno Smith only had one season together in 2017, but he’s still part of the history of the franchise. On Friday, March 6, the Las Vegas Raiders made waves when they officially released Smith after one year with the franchise.

“The Raiders are set to release veteran QB Geno Smith, sources say,” Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on Friday. “Las Vegas acquired Smith in an offseason trade with Seattle last year. Now, the 35-year-old finds himself on the open market after just one year as a Raider.”

Smith has played for a handful of teams in the NFL. He started his career playing for the New York Jets from 2013 to 2016, followed by the New York Giants. Then, he went to the Los Angeles Chargers in 2018, Seattle Seahawks from 2019 to 2024 and, finally, the Las Vegas Raiders from 2025 to now.

He’s had success on the field and was named Comeback Player of the Year in 2022. While the Raiders tanked during the 2025-26 season, it’s difficult to really blame Smith, but the team like has a new franchise quarterback in Fernando Mendoza, so the move isn’t a surprise.

So, where could Smith land? The Vikings are one name that’s popping up. Alec Lewis states, “Just like the Kyler news earlier this week, this is relevant to the Vikings. Can sign for the $1.3 million minimum. Geno, like most of these available QBs, thinks very highly of the Vikings opportunity.”

Another Former New York Giants Quarterback Making Waves

Daniel Jones parted ways with the New York Giants in November 2024 with a high-profile release, and he’s currently with the Indianapolis Colts. The 2026 free agency period starts on Wednesday, March 11, and ahead of that window opening up, Jones received some major career news. The development comes after Jones had a strong season with the Colts, too.

On Tuesday, March 3, just ahead of the free agency period, the Indianapolis Colts the first step in what appears to be making sure the soon-to-be free agent quarterback doesn’t go anywhere.

“The tag guarantees the Colts the right of first refusal for Jones, preserving the right to match any competing offer sheet he might sign with an interested club,” according to a Tuesday, March 3, report from Stephen Holder of ESPN. The move came before Tuesday’s deadline to assess franchise or transition tags on players who are set to go to free agency next week.

Holder adds, “Jones does not sign a competing offer sheet, he would earn a one-year guaranteed salary of $37.833 million.”

For the 2025-26 NFL season, Jones started in 13 games before getting hit with a season-ending Achilles injury. He clocked 3,101 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions, according to NFL research, with a 68 percentage completion percentage. Plus, in his first 10 weeks, Jones led the Colts to an 8-2 record and led the NFL in passing yards, according to ESPN.

Last week during NFL Combine, Colts general manager Chris Ballard said that the franchise and Jones were in contract talks. “When both sides are driven to get it done, it usually works out in the right way,” he said.
