As the Atlanta Falcons inch closer to the start of NFL free agency, they have a few clear roster holes that need to be addressed. The wide receiver and quarterback positions are likely near the top of Atlanta’s offseason wish list. Could soon-to-be-released quarterback Kyler Murray be an option for the Falcons in 2026?

The former No. 1 overall pick has had some success over his seven NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, but he’s dealt with injury issues and the team simply hasn’t won enough games since his arrival. While Murray is obviously talented, his status as a franchise QB has been up for debate in recent years.

Nonetheless, he’s clearly a starting-caliber quarterback and should have no shortage of interested suitors. NFL.com’s Kevin Patra listed the Falcons as one of six potential landing spots for Murray in free agency.

“Atlanta chasing Murray would be the latest indicator that the new staff isn’t completely sold on Michael Penix Jr., who is coming off another major injury, as the team’s starter,” wrote Patra. “With the Falcons parting ways with Kirk Cousins, ATL needs a veteran passer — or two. How would Penix respond to the addition of someone like Murray, who likely wants a shot at playing to revive his standing within the league? New coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense would fit Murray’s skill set, and he’d represent the most dynamic QB the coach has employed in years.”

The Falcons are releasing Kirk Cousins on the first day of the new league year, so they will need to add a quality backup at the very least. Michael Penix Jr. is coming off an ACL reconstruction, and while the expectation is that he will be ready for the season opener, the team may want to add another starting-caliber QB just in case.

However, considering Murray’s injury history, and the fact that Penix hasn’t had a chance to play without another Pro Bowl QB breathing down his neck, Atlanta may want to avoid another quarterback controversy.

Ultimately, head coach Kevin Stefanski is trying to win games, though. If he feels Murray gives the Falcons the best chance to win, then all bets are off. Murray will officially be released at the start of the new league year on March 11.
