The 2026 NFL Draft is fairly deep at the wide receiver position, filled mostly by quality depth pieces but lacking multiple true WR1’s for NFL teams. However, there is one player who is clearly ahead of everyone else in this class, and that is Ohio State standout Carnell Tate. Tate may be overshadowed by some, as he’s been alongside greats while at Ohio State, but we are going to talk about why he is next up from WRU.
Tate, a former five-star recruit out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, played his final two seasons of high school football in Florida, where he would go ballistic. In his senior season, he would average 20.3 yards per reception and eight touchdowns in eight games. At Ohio State, he would make an impact as a true freshman, but would not become a starter until the following season. While he has played alongside some major names (Chris Olave, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Emeka Egbuka, and Jeremiah Smith), he has consistently been a great receiver.
Carnell Tate is a contested catch machine. His ability to high point the ball and pluck it out of the air is unlike anyone in this class. He uses his massive wingspan to expand his catch radius, paired with glue-like hands, to catch nearly anything that is thrown his way. His ability to flip his hips to sell go routes, only to snap back toward the quarterback or on a post, is an NFL-ready trait. Great football IQ to find the soft spot in zone coverage and sit. I also love that he isn’t afraid to get hit across the middle, and to go and hit someone in run blocking.
The national media was making a big deal of his 4.53 40-yard dash time at the combine, but his game tape is faster. Some NFL teams will overthink that. He could bulk up at the next level, as if he is jammed at the line against a bigger corner, he struggles to release. You’d like to see him keep his pad level lower on routes back to the quarterback when they drift high, as that can be a tell to his cornerback or safety. I’m not sure he will be a take-the-top-off-a-defense kind of guy, but he doesn’t necessarily have to be, either.
Carnell Tate is far and away the top wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft. If there is a team in the first round that needs a receiver, they need to find a way to add Tate to the roster. He receives a first-round grade and is a player who should easily hear his name called in the top half of the first round.
