As free agency draws closer, the Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly made a “strong push” to re-sign free agent cornerback Montaric Brown before Monday’s legal tampering period opens, according to the NFL Network.
However, it sounds like Brown has a strong market developing if he chooses to hit free agency.
“He is the guy that the Jaguars like a lot coming off a very strong year,” Cameron Wolfe said of Brown on Sunday. “They are also making a strong push late in the week to try to re-sign him before he hits free agency.”
Brown took a big step forward last season, showcasing his abilities to start on a weekly basis and perform at a high level while doing so. He allowed a completion rate of just 54% on 68 targets and held opponents to just 10.4 yards per catch.
Brown also flashed impressive ball production, coming away with two interceptions and forcing nine pass breakups.

“Another guy who’s coming off a great year,” Wolfe added. “In a perfect world, the Jags would love to start him next year opposite Travis Hunter at cornerback, but he’s going to have a lot of outside interest. You don’t get playmaking, solid corners all that often.”
Wolfe continued, “If he reaches the market, people tell me he could surpass $10-plus million, maybe $12-13 million. A lot of contenders are looking for cornerbacks. So he and his team have a decision: do we take the Jags offer right before free agency or do we test the market and see what we can get? It’s a good problem for Montaric Brown.”
This isn’t the first time recently that we’ve heard about Brown garnering quite a bit of interest. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler listed Brown as one of his “sleeper free agents” coming out of the NFL combine.Â
One of the potentially interested teams, according to Fowler, is the San Francisco 49ers.
While the Jaguars may be making a late push to re-sign Brown, given the attention he seems to be getting from other teams, hitting the open market could increase his price tag.
If the Jaguars want to re-sign Brown, there is going to be a lot of competition to do so.
