The Miami Dolphins cut former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Monday morning, and they aren’t done moving away from former Alabama players, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Dolphins have traded former All-American defensive back from Alabama, Minkah Fitzpatrick, to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2027 seventh-round draft pick.
Â

Â
Schefter also reports that the Jets and Fitzpatrick have signed a three-year, $40 million contract. The Dolphins originally drafted Fitzpatrick with the 11th pick in the 2018 NFL draft after Fitzpatrick spent three seasons in Tuscaloosa with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Â
He spent his first season in the NFL with the Dolphins, starting 11 games, with 80 tackles, two tackles for loss, nine pass breakups, one interception, and one pick-six as a rookie. In 2019, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a first-round draft pick, where he spent six seasons before the Steelers traded Fitzpatrick back to Miami. In his eight years in the NFL, Fitzpatrick has started every game he’s played in since his rookie year, with 120 total appearances, totaling 690 tackles, one sack, seven fumble recoveries (including one scoop-and-score), six forced fumbles, 60 pass breakups, 21 interceptions, and four pick-sixes. He has been named to the Pro Bowl five times in his career and was named First-Team All-Pro three times.
Â
Fitzpatrick is a two-time national champion with Alabama as a former five-star recruit. He was named a Consensus All-American twice (unanimous in 2017), winning the Chuck Bednarik and Jim Thorpe Awards in 2017 with the Crimson Tide. During his Alabama tenure, Fitzpatrick totaled 171 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 26 pass breakups, nine interceptions, four pick-sixes, and two fumble recoveries. He appeared in every game over his three-year Alabama career.
