The New York Giants reportedly have interest in a trade for a superstar linebacker.
According to Easton Butler of Packers Report, the San Francisco 49ers have been getting calls on superstar linebacker Fred Warner, and the Giants are one of the interested suitors.
“The 49ers have been receiving calls about LB Fred Warner, with the Giants being one of the calls, per source,” Butler reported.
Butler did not say how serious the 49ers are about trading Warner, but this is not the first time we’ve seen the veteran floated as a trade candidate.
Previously, Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com reported that the Niners could be willing to move Warner this offseason, but with an interesting caveat.
“I don’t know if San Francisco will trade Warner. Heard they might consider it if somehow they could get Dre Greenlaw back in the fold,” Stapleton said.
That is an odd connection. Greenlaw is a former 49er, but he is also under contract with the Denver Broncos and there is no telling if Denver would move him.
A four-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro, Warner is one of the best linebackers in the league. He is coming off a significant injury, but he’s still just 29 years old and should have plenty of gas left in the tank.
Warner is elite at just about everything. He can cover, tackle, play the run and rush the passer with the best of them. He’s also a phenomenal leader who would help head coach John Harbaugh build a strong culture in New York.
New York’s need at linebacker stems from the team releasing Bobby Okereke, who had two down years in a row before he was cut loose. The Giants could also lose Micah McFadden, who is a pending free agent.
It remains to be seen what the Niners would be willing to take for Warner, but chances are it’ll be significant because of how good the veteran is.
That said, Warner would be a massive upgrade for the Giants and could singlehandedly change the face of the defense.
