Former Philadelphia Eagles safety Reed Blankenship is set to begin a new chapter in his NFL career after agreeing to a three-year, $24.75 million contract with the Houston Texans. His agent, Kyle McCarthy, confirmed the deal on Monday, reported ESPN. The contract reportedly includes $16.5 million in guaranteed money, signaling Houston’s confidence in the veteran defensive back.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, Blankenship joins Jaelan Phillips (Carolina Panthers) and Nakobe Dean (Las Vegas Raiders) as former starters for the Eagles who have agreed to deals with new teams on the opening day of NFL free agency.

Blankenship’s path to the NFL was far from typical. After going undrafted in 2022 out of Middle Tennessee State University, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and quickly worked his way into the lineup. Blankenship received a modest $5,000 signing bonus and only $55,000 in guaranteed money when he first signed his contract.
What began as a long-shot opportunity soon turned into a steady role in the Eagles’ defense. He started four games during his rookie season and continued to hold a regular spot in the secondary over the following years.

Now 27, Blankenship played a key role in Eagles’ defense during the 2024 season. According to ESPN, the unit ranked first in the league in passing yards allowed, giving up just 174.2 yards per game, and finished second in opponent scoring with an average of 17.8 points allowed.

Even during a season when injuries forced constant changes in the Eagles’ secondary, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio praised Blankenship, as reported by ESPN, as a stabilizing presence on the field. Over four seasons in Philadelphia, he appeared in 56 games with 50 starts, recording nine interceptions, 23 passes defended, and 308 tackles while establishing himself as a dependable NFL safety.
