The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed punter Cameron Johnston to a one-year contract, the team announced on Tuesday.

Johnston, 34, joined the Steelers as a free agent in 2024, but was lost for the season to a major leg injury in Week 2. The Steelers signed Corliss Waitman to replace Johnston, who spent the entire year and much of the 2025 offseason rehabbing his leg injury.

Waitman punted well in 2024, averaging 46.4 yards per punt gross and 41.9 yards per punt net, with 41.5% of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

Last offseason, the Steelers held a competition between Johnston and Waitman, and the  younger Waitman surprisingly won the battle and the starting job. Johnston was waived and caught on with the Buffalo Bills, where another injury sidelined him, this time to his foot after a roughing the kicker penalty.

Johnston was released from the Buffalo injured reserve with an injury settlement and signed with the New York Giants for a few weeks before being released on Dec. 22. In total, Johnston punted 11 times in 2205, averaging 44.5 yards gross, 32.4 yards net and 18.2% of them were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

While Johnston was bouncing around the league, Waitman’s numbers took a small step backward in Pittsburgh in 2025. His averages fell to 45.5 yards gross and 41.7 yards net, though he improved slightly to 41.9% downed in side the 20.

Waitman is a restricted free agent entering the 2026 offseason and the Steelers have not been able to sign him to a contract. They must tender him an offer by Wednesday at 4 p.m. or they will lose his rights.

The Steelers can sign Johnston before the start of the new league year because he was released by the Giants in 2025.
